Collagen

What is collagen?

Collagen is the main building block that provides the structural connectivity within the connective tissues within the body such as the bones, skin, hair, muscles, tendons, and ligaments.  Collagen makes up 25% to 35%  of the body’s protein content. It provides a plump and youthful appearance to your skin and prevents the formation of wrinkles, fine lines, and sagging.

What is collagen made of?

Collagen is made from amino acids (specifically glycine, proline, hydroxyproline, and arginine). Collagen is mainly derived from animal substances, in particular bovine connective tissue or fish. However, collagen can also be sourced from fish and plant substances.

Why should l care about collagen?

As we age the amount of collagen in our body declines. The quality of collagen also declines. The side effects of this on our skin include an increase in wrinkles, skin dryness, and a reduction in skin elasticity.

Why does the quality and quantity of my collagen decline and how can l protect it?

The quality and quantity of collagen in our bodies reduces for a number of reasons in addition to aging. Some of these include:

Protect skin from sun damage

Protect your skin from the sun by wearing a daily sunscreen. Seek shade when possible and wear a hat. Above all. Do not sun bathe. The sun produces ultra violet radiation creates an enzyme within the skin that are very damaging to collagen and impairs the bodies ability to heal. Prevention is superior to trying to rectify damage already done.

Cleanse your face on a daily basis

Reduce the amount of free radicals on your skin which is produced by everyday air pollution by cleansing your face on a daily basis. Also use a moisturiser to help create a layer that protects the skin from pollution exposure.

Stop smoking

Toxins in tobacco cigarette smoke create damaging enzymes which reduce and impair collagen in the skin leading to less elasticity and premature aging.

Avoid infrared radiation & heat radiation

Infrared produces collagen damagin enzymes and it can come from the heat emitted from the sun, or exposure to heat onto the skin from other sources such as an oven or a fire,

Topical antioxidents such as Niacinamide can reduce the damage from infrared radiation. q10 and

Stop stressing

Stress reduces your skins immune function thereby reducing your skins ability to repair damaged collagen repair, heal the skin and to generation new collagen.

Get adequate sleep

People who do not get enough adequate sleep (7-9 hours of sleep) have a higher risk of having health conditions such as diabetes, hypertension, and obesity.
Sleep deprivation has a direct impact on the health of your skin. Lack of sleep will increase the skin's signs of aging through skin sagginess, dark circles under their eye, wrinkles and fine lines. Sleep assists your skin to repair and renew itself and most importantly to produce collagen.

Maintain a balanced diet with adequate fruit and vegetables

Make sure your diet includes fruit and vegetables to ensure you digest enough Vitamin C a key vitamin to help in the production of collagen and also helps reduce the signs of aging. Avoid foods that contain refined sugars and processed food as they increase the signs of skin ageing and reduce the quality of collagen.
