Cleansing oils

What are cleansing oils/balms?

  • They are generally used before you would cleanse your face with a cleanser.
  • Cleansing oils do an amazing job at breaking down makeup residue, pollutants, dirt, sunscreen, excess sebum production that accumulates on the skin throughout the day
  • Cleansing with water-based cleansers can leave the skin feeling a little stripped and dry, however, cleansing the skin with an oil or a balm applies nourishment to allow the skin to be more hydrated

What is the difference between a cleansing oil and a cleanser?

Cleansing oils are oil-based. They contain oil that draws out the oil, makeup, and impurities from the pores. and are oil-based. The oil in the cleanser attracts the oil on our skin and it washes away easily when emulsified with water when it is rinsed away. Traditional cleansers are water-based. They rely on detergents to break down oil and impurities on the skin.

What is the difference between a cleansing oil and a cleansing balm?

Both are very similar however the consistency is different. The cleansing oil is presented in a liquid and the cleansing balm is a harder balm-like substance. Both products have a very similar feel and consistency once applied to the skin. The balm melts down into a liquid form as it is placed onto the skin.

How to oil cleanse?

  1. Apply the oil cleanser on dry skin (You do not need to moisten or wet your skin). Only use water when you are ready to remove the oil cleanser from your skin. Mixing it early in the process will reduce the effectiveness of the cleansing oil or balm.
  2. Use a pea-size amount of cleansing oil and gently massage it into your face using your fingertips. Take a few minutes to get every area of your face to ensure all makeup, sebum, pollution, and dirt will be removed. Don’t leave the oil cleanser on your skin for too long as the oil may reside in your pores and be more difficult to remove.
  3. Rinse your hands with lukewarm water and wash the oil cleanser off your face. As the water reacts to the oil cleanser it will begin to emulsify and be very easy to remove. Ensure you remove it all from your skin to prevent pores from getting clogged.

Note

  • You don’t need to dry your skin before applying an oil cleanser.
  • An oil cleanser should not be used as a replacement for your traditional cleanser. You should still use a water-based cleanser after your oil cleanser.
  • After using an oil-based cleanser ensure you wash it all off very well because failure to do so can lead to breakouts. Remember oil-based cleansers contain oil that can stay in the pores which leads to breakouts if not properly removed by using a water-based cleanser afterward

What are the benefits of oil/balm cleansers?

  • Cleansing oils leave your skin moisturised, soft and nourished.
  • They deeply remove all makeup and sunscreen which can stubbornly stay on the skin and clog pores and build up on the skin causing bacteria and preventing from other skincare products from penetrating the skin and providing their full benefits
  • Even if you dont wear much makeup or sunscreen the oil will also remove pollutants and sebum build up
